Our Immigrant Neighbors, American Values, and Resilience

Three beneficial actions to build up family resilience

Today many of our immigrant neighbors are living in fear. Public immigration enforcement in our neighborhoods has made streets unrecognizable. Scenes of families being torn apart live for the world to see are upsetting. Our American Values and compassion for our neighbors demand a better plan.

If you’ve been directly impacted by this trauma you know that you’re not alone. You and your family are wisely working with an immigration rights attorney. You understand that creating a plan to navigate any setback is power. But solutions take time.

Delays to your desired result may cause stress for you and others in your family. It may be a good idea to develop an added plan for family resilience.

Creating a Resilience Action Plan will help family members manage and recover from the pressure of life changing events.

We recommend three (3) beneficial actions to build up family resilience.

1. Check In Regularly:

Hold a family meeting once a week. Virtual meetings work too. Share updates and discuss the progress of your most important concerns. You can adjust your plan together if needed.

2. Practice Self Care:

Ask every member of your family to pay attention to their feelings. Consider creating a quite space in your home. Family members can relax for ten minutes to help manage stress. Call a mental well-being professional if anyone wants more support. Remember to eat well daily. Ask a friend or neighbor to deliver groceries for awhile if you’re growing anxious of being in public. Many grocery stores will also deliver healthful food right to your door.

3. Build Up Your Support Network:

Develop safe spaces and grow your support network. Make time each week for Family Arts and Culture Night. Simple projects for fun and creativity work best. Don’t forget to invite your neighbors. They can host an arts event next time. When ready, visit your local heritage center and take a low or no cost paint lesson. Connecting, learning, and laughing with others will help everyone thrive beyond today’s challenges.

By creating a Resilience Action Plan in addition to professional help family members will begin to feel some control again. Taking smart actions during tough situations are a great way to grow Resilience. Keep in mind, your American Dream demands your best plan.
